Prosthodontics Q&A
What is prosthodontics?
Prosthodontics is a dental specialization concerned with the design and installation of artificial teeth replacement and issues with oral and maxillofacial tissues. Dentists providing prosthodontics receive advanced education for three years beyond their four years of dental school, along with special training as required by the American Dental Association.
The additional education gives prosthodontists advanced knowledge of cosmetic dentistry, dental crowns, bridges, dental implants, temporomandibular disorders, and dentures.
What are prosthodontic procedures?
Prosthodontics covers a wide range of dental services to replace missing teeth. Some common prosthodontic procedures include:
- Tooth extraction
- Dental crowns
- Veneers
- Dental bridges
- Dental implants
- Dental fillings
- Partial or complete dentures
- Total mouth reconstruction
Prosthodontics also involves the restoration of jaw structures. If you’re looking to fix functional or aesthetic problems with your smile, Dr. Knight can help.
Why should I see a prosthodontist?
If you require tooth removal or repair, or you have a condition that requires the replacement or restoration of your teeth, a prosthodontist provides advanced dental care. Dr. Knight has prosthodontic training to handle more complex dental cases and provide optimal results.
When is tooth removal necessary?
Tooth removal may be required if your tooth is decayed, damaged, or broken beyond repair. If a dental filling or restoration such as a crown can’t fix the damaged tooth, a tooth extraction is likely. You may need teeth extracted if your mouth is too crowded as well.
Extraction may also be necessary if your teeth are impacted and can’t emerge through the gums properly.
How are teeth removed?
Tooth removal is a relatively quick outpatient procedure. There are two types of tooth removal: simple extraction and surgical extraction.
Simple extractions
If your tooth is visible above the gum line, it’s considered a simple extraction. Dr. Knight provides a local anesthetic to numb the area around your tooth. Then an instrument is used to loosen the tooth for removal.
Surgical extractions
If the tooth is below the gum line or impacted, the removal is considered a surgical extraction. Dr. Knight provides a local anesthetic and intravenous anesthesia. In some cases, you may require general anesthesia during the procedure. She makes a small incision in the gums to extract the tooth.
