Porcelain Veneers Q&A
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are tooth-colored pieces of porcelain bonded to your permanent teeth. Some people get one or two veneers, but most get six or eight. This restores symmetry to your smile, boosting your confidence and self-esteem.
If you dream of having a Hollywood-worthy smile, porcelain veneers provide an effective and long-lasting treatment option. They can address a variety of oral imperfections, including smaller-than-average teeth, chips and cracks, and teeth that don’t respond to teeth whitening.
Do I qualify for porcelain veneers?
To determine if you qualify for porcelain veneers, schedule a preliminary appointment with Dr. Knight.
During your initial consultation, she conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and asks about your goals for treatment, including how many veneers you want and your budget. If you have uneven or crooked teeth, you might need orthodontic treatment before moving forward.
Next, Dr. Knight takes X-rays to evaluate the health of your teeth. She looks at your X-rays for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or the need for root canals. If any of these issues are present, you may need to wait to get your porcelain veneers. If everything looks good, Dr. Knight moves forward with treatment.
What is the process for getting porcelain veneers?
Getting porcelain veneers takes two separate appointments spaced several weeks apart.
At your first appointment, Dr. Knight administers a local anesthetic to numb your tooth roots and gums. After the anesthesia sets in, she carefully shaves a thin layer of enamel from each tooth, about one millimeter thick. Then, she takes impressions of each tooth receiving a veneer. Dr. Knight sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that manufactures your custom veneers.
A week or two later, your return to Knight’s Dental. At your second appointment, Dr. Knight administers a local anesthetic once again, and carefully bonds your porcelain veneers to the front of your teeth. The appointment takes between 60-90 minutes and you leave the office with a brilliant, attractive smile.
How do I keep my porcelain veneers in great shape?
To keep your porcelain veneers in great shape, brush and floss daily and visit Knight’s Dental every six months for an oral exam and professional cleaning. It’s also important to avoid bad habits like nail-biting or chewing on ice cubes, as these practices can chip or crack your veneers. With good oral hygiene, porcelain veneers typically last 10-15 years.
